I am gonna ask this question then search a bit. I would like to replace the hubs on my trailer. Single axle, 1992, six lugs, 15" wheels. Dexter, I believe. Where can I get either a new set or even a different brand that will work?

I am I describing it correctly? The lug bolts are on the brake DRUM. That is the part I need, but being a 92, with rarely maintained brakes, I suppose the Back Plate, Bearings, Brakes and Drum will be in order here. I found the DEXTER site and they have a nice looking NEVER LUBE bearing set up. I wonder if that model is suitable for the boat trailer. THoughts?

Assuming your hubs and axles are OK, a full R&R would be a) new inner grease seal b) new bearings and races c) new backing plate (has shoes and wheel cylinder assembly) and d) new drums. You might be able to re-use the drums; have a local brake shop see if they can turn them.

Regarding grease bearing caps....I haven't used the oil bath fittings so I can't comment. Many people swear by Bearing Buddies. The real ones are much better than the knock offs IMO.

I did find lots of info on Etrailer. Videos and lots of pictures. I am trying to figure what size. Hard to measure when mounted. I am thinking the hole pattern is 6 x 5-1/2"? 6 I got... (lug bolts). 5-1/2" would be stud to stud, but the spindle is in the way. Also the drum diameter. Looks like the plate can be measured from the back.... 12"???

Etrailer had a no-name brand of what size i believe I have for $150. THe dexter is $235 each. Free shipping on stuff over $99.

WELL.... recent road trip turned scary. All six lug nuts on the driver's side came loose. I was able to remove the drum. I called a Mobile Mechanic to press out the lugs. On his trip to find new ones of the right size, he struck out. Then he called and told me he would have to fix it Monday and did not return.... He has my drum and will not answer my calls. The drum was also damaged around the housing as the wheel bounced around a bit. So I don't have that one. I was lucky enough to be at a Store. A man in the store has a junk yard and said, "Hey, I have a drum in my yard, let me go get it." Dammed if he didn't. So I now have mis-matched drums. But I made it the last hour to the lake.

Yikes. If it were me, I'd remove the good hub to look for part numbers and get measurements. I'd get one of the suppliers on the phone and get them to help match a replacement drum to what you have. From there, they should be able to recommend all the remaining bits you'll need.

Trailer mfgs used hub assemblies from just a few suppliers. Just need to figure out what mfg was used in your unit and hope it's still available.

If you can't match anything (surprising) and have to replace both sides, I'd ask about if a disc brake swap is feasible....they are so much simpler than the drum setups.

Looks like the lug nuts weren't tight...is that what happened? Or maybe an incorrect rim for the hub?

I have to admit that I have not stayed up on the maintenance of the trailer. I did buy a spare wheel and tire, and I have had a flat, years ago. I have added grease, but that is about it. The brakes did not work when I got it.... maybe 12 years ago. My guess is that all the nuts came loose. As I said, they have not been tinkered with in quite a while. But I will certainly check them all on my next trip or regularly during boating season. We made it back home, a 3 hour trip with a stop of two for gas and shopping. I checked the hubs for excessive heat each time. Figured the JY bearings might be suspect, but they were the same temp as the OEM side each time I touched them. So now I am home, I will get to work on figuring all this out. I did think of changing to disks. Thanks for chiming in.... seems like you were the only one with thoughts on this.....

There's another recent thread with all sorts of good recommendations on how to triage and R&R trailer wheels and brakes....I think that thread sucks the oxygen out of the room.

I've been in your situation and I flipped to be a trailer maintenance junkie....learned that trailer problems are about THE LAST thing I want to deal with when I'm on vacation.
