    Smokin 196

    05 196 limited. Stereo upgrade.

Hooked up a belkin power adaptor to my mini Ipod using the conveniently located 12 receptacle in the glove box, plugged in the pod to the head unit, and off we went for some fun on the water.

    What's that smell?

Engine? Smells like plastic, quick check under the dash! No, lets see, what could it be? Its the freaken Belkin power adaptor in the glove box! Melted right down to a blob of plastic. Pitched it into the river.

what the heck? Figured it must be the Belkin adaptor, picked up on of the new IGO units from radio shack and back to the lake. Plugged it in and same thing started to happen again.

Must be a short in the wiring of the 12V receptacle which surprises the heck out of me. Are these things checked at the factory?

    Lets see,
    2005 196 ZR6
Hull leaks- improperly installed thru hull fitting for exhaust.
    2 engine oil leaks.
    Insulation inside motorbox falling off.
Quick drain hose for oil pan delivered laying on serpentine belt (caught that one).
    and now this.

Disapointing for a boat that costs this much. I have a great dealer and they will take care of it in short order but it is a hassel to get it over there and then pick it up again.

Just checked the receptacle and everything appears to be ok. One quick question if anybody knows. Standard 12 receptacle but this one has the black wire to the center and the red to the outside. I thought that the red (power) was the center and the black (ground) was on the outside. Unfortunately I can't get at the back of the other power outlets in the boat to check so if somebody gets a chance could you check yours (glove box power outlet) and let me know.

This might just be a case of someone plugging the feed wires to the receptacle in backwards.

    Thanks

In general the center is the positive contact and the outside is the negative. Sounds like yours is wired backwards.

This happened to my boat as well, even down to the melted Belkin power adapter. Seems that somebody in the factory doesn't realize that the red wire goes to the center! I was planning on bitching but I forgot about it until I read your post.

Checked it with a meter today and it was reversed. Simple fix but even simpler for somebody to do it correctly at the factory. Bought a new Belkin and everything is fine. Correct Craft will be replacing the melted 12 receptacle cover in the fall.
